In New Mexico and across the desert states of the American South West one can find the remnants of a lost space age which twinned utopian ideals from science fiction with the paranoic machinery of deterrence. One also finds the sites of a new optimistic tourist driven future for space travel.

A few miles and a range of low hills separate the site of the planned Spaceport America (where Richard Branson plans to launch his spectacular Virgin Galactic space line sometime in 2010), from the site of the first atomic explosion.

Between these two locations lie discarded rockets, atomic age ghost towns, alien landscapes, and a town that renamed itself after a radio show.

In this book Paul Freeman explores the past and future sites of the rocket age in a series of large format photographs and pays homage to American colour photographers of the 1970’s.

LA1980

“LA1980″ is a look at a now-vanished Los Angeles; skaters, punks, rock-climbers, drummers, gay-pride, Hare Krishnas, muscle-cars, and Moderne landmarks.

In 1979 there were still vacant lots on Wilshire Blvd in the Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills had the Wonder-Bread Bakery on Little Santa Monica Blvd, and a noticeable number of buildings still had 1920’s signage intact.

If Melrose Ave was coming into a hip incarnation, Beverly Blvd was still where upholsterers worked in blank-front buildings. The Farmer’s Market on 3rd St. was somnolent, and the dinosaurs at the George Page Museum were surrounded only by seeping tar.

The original color negatives were shot between 1979 and 1982. They haven’t seen daylight since their creation.

STRANGE ABOMINATIONS
The heavy shadows, distorted views and textured imagery all play a role in illuminating the darkness that pervades the natural landscape. The scenes are varied, some chaotic and confusing, others quiet and controlled. Each photograph essentially plays out like a narrative of the unknown, asking the viewer to be the storyteller. As for the chosen medium, the simplicity and quirkiness of the Holga camera provides its own tools for exploration. The resulting imagery reflects an enchanting and disrupting view of the world– one that continues to mystify even as we strive to find answers.
